Legal Grips?

Hey all!
First time here. I finally was shooting well enough that it was time to upgrade my .22, so I picked up a used S&W 41 about six months ago. Been a great gun, but I have a question about the used stocks/grips that came with it. Local club members seem to think they are ok... BUT I was poking through the conventional pistol rulebook and I noticed a rule about any projections at the top of the grip being illegal if they have less than a 90 degree angle. By my interpretation I think they fail, but I wanted to check with the pros before I head off to the state match in a few weeks. So what say you all?

Can you guys generally tell me anything more about these grips? The salesman said they were Herretts, but I don't see anything like this on their current website.

They look pretty close to being herrit grips.

Where did you read that rule you stated ?

For bullseye shooting they look fine to me.

Someone else may say differently...

You know, I have looked at that illistration before but never really looked at it.

none of my grips are like that except for my hammerli FP60 for free pistol.

As far as the letter of the rule, then you are right, they would be not allowed.

I personally would not call you on it, but someone else might.

As an aside, they may very well be grips made by Jay scott, have a set on my M52-1 but without the wood area in question.

Do not know what the rules were in the 70's, but they would not be legal in any discipline today except for free pistol as I read it.

They are a nice set of grips and would not want to alter them, but it is up to you.(it would not take much)

I would just use them and not look back.

I would just file that overhang until it looks like the picture in the rulebook.

Depending on how your hand fits, i would actually try and add putty to that area to make it 90 degrees.

Taking wood away makes the grips worthless to a buyer.

If they feel that good to you and these are the grips that i will stick with, then go ahead and remove some wood, but I cringe at that thought.

Another idea might be to send your pictures to the NRA Competitions Division and ask them for a ruling on your grips. I believe Dennis Willing, Director of NRA Competitive Shooting Division, has posted on this board but I can't find his contact information.

If you can't find Dennis' contact info, I can get it from Jon Nortemann, or we can just ask Jon Nortemann for his opinion. He is a longtime referee also, and I think he's close friends with Jon.

Thanks for all the responses. If we could get an experienced voice on this I would appreciate it! I'll try to track down the competitive division on Google. I'm not totally wedded to the grips, although they do seem to improve things a few points. Just be a bummer to get used to using them and then get denied at a big match and be forced to use something unfamiliar.
Maybe I'll get out some temporary poster putty and see if thats a workable option with something a little more permanent. No way I'm taking wood off, I've already had offers from guys if I ever think about selling the grips and they are in good condition.
