Coated bullets Empty Coated bullets

Post by 8eightring Fri May 03, 2024 12:47 pm

In the past I have been buying Brazos coated bullets for reloads in my pistols,9mm,38, 44, and 45. It appears that Brazos is a no go now. Does anyone have any experience with alternate suppliers?
Let us know how their product works for you.

I have used Missouri 155 and 185 coated 45 bullets. You need to sort them more than Brazos but they shoot.

I have been using the 160 grain Brazos bullet for a few years now. Hopeful Brazos gets their problems resolved soon. Only one other bullet manufacturer I have found makes that HG242s bullet, and they don't do coated.
Got several 45 molds for 185 - 200 grain but really like the 160 coated for indoor shooting.
If MP molds would make a 4 or 6 cavity copy I would buy one and use 45-45-10 lube indoors.

I like Bayou Bullets 185 Grain SWC for my 45, pretty much interchange them with Brazo's

https://www.brazosprecision.com/ still appears to be doing business.

I prefer Precision bullets. They are swaged, so they are very consistent in weight and shape. Coating has never failed.

I believe Brazos bullets, at least the 180 grain SWC for the 45 are cast.

I'm pretty sure they closed last year some time.

These guys are known to have a good durable coating but has anyone tested them at 50 yards? They make a ".451" coated 200gr SWC, which happens to have no lube groove. Why 451 vs 452 is a head scratcher for me unless perhaps that's pre-coating?

Brazos web site is still up but everything is listed as not for sale.  I believe their mold supplier went out of business. This may affect more cast bullet manufactures.

Magma closed up shop so no moulds or lube sizer dies anymore

Certainly for the home hobbyist there are other options though? Were all the commercial guys using this Magma?

I've been putting off casting for a couple reasons. I normally buy swaged. Interest in casting my own is to be insulated from these types of problems

I think their machines, moulds, and equipment ruled the commercial roost. Trouble with bullet businesses is it’s high volume, low margin, and heavy shipping…the only big wins are the people selling equipment

Shooting T&B coated 200gr LSWCs in a scoped 625 I got 10-ring sized groups at 50y. Good enough for me. They are priced right and shipped super fast.

Odd thing: when I tried the Missouri 200gr non-lube-groove coated bullets I got poor groups, 6" or so. Not sure if it's the no-lube-groove design, or just a bad batch. I would have to try the NLG versions from other suppliers like Acme, Blue, etc. to be sure. The Missouri coated 185s (which do have a lube groove) were good, like a 2.75" group, so I am not blaming the supplier in general.
