Newby 1911 Question

I keep reading (not so much here) about recoil buffers for 1911s so I figured that I should try one. I ordered some that had good feedback and tried to install it (in two different guns) but I apparently don't know where they go. I thought that they went between the spring and guide rod but having tried that on my Kimber Custom and Springfield RO, neither gun would release from slide lock as the slide could not be retracted far enough to cam down the stop lever. I can accept that i am mostly clueless about 1911s, that may improve after my Clark video arrives, then again.....

I feel a bit less stupid now. I did exactly as described/shown on both of my 1911 pistols but in each case I was not able to retract the slide far enough (by hand) for the 'cutout' to cam the slide stop down so that the slide could run forward with the buffer in place. I could release the slide by depressing the stop manually but I was honestly afraid to try shooting it so I took the buffer back out. Guess I should 'give it another shot'.

A recoil buffer is not needed in a wad gun. 
It may even cause the gun to be less reliable.

waste of money on a wad gun, they are only needed if shooting full power loads and not then if you have the correct recoil spring

....plus; they fail at the least opportune time.  Ask me how I know.
