Ultra Dot rings

I read somewhere that the rings that come with the Ultra Dot are junk. Is this a true statement and if so which are the good ones. Im putting a match dot on my 1911

That was true on the UD I got. My pistol smith swapped them out for some Weaver rings and I have had no problems to date.

I've been happy with the Weaver Quad Lock rings. Come in medium and high but only in 1", not 30mm. My local Wal-Mart carries them- about $10.

For the Weaver brand top mount rings, is it supposed to be easy to screw the four ring screws into the base completely? Is a electric drill with screwdriver bit supposed to be used? I can't screw them all the way in by hand in and have about 1/8" gap.

Ultra Dot rings work OK on a .22. On my .45 I use Warn rings that I get at Cabelas. They are all steel and hold up well.

There's supposed to be a gap.

I use standard UltraDot 1" rings on my Marvel .22 and Millett 30mm adj-loc rings on my 45.

I purchased some cheaper rings (a company called AIM) for my 45 on ebay and tossed them. I shouldn't have relied on $15 rings on a $2500 gun.

I like/use the Weaver "SureGrip" rings - (med ht.) on the Clark slide mount on my wadgun.

Brownells # 955-000-008. These med. rings are as low as most mfr's low rings.



On my 22s I use the Weaver "Top mount" low rings. These are LOW-you can barely get a business card between the rings and base.

Installing these is a chore - they hook on one side of the cap, with two screws on the other side. The sight draws right as you tighten the screws. You have to start with the sight rolled slightly left. -- -- See you at practice tomorrow Don. -- Russ OR

I never had any issues with my Match Dot and Ultra Dot rings once tightened properly. You need to tighten the lower screws first then the top ones. 10k rounds on a slide mount 45.

Roddy Toyota used Burris rings when he put an Ultra Dot on my Ruger MK II.

I put a drop of epoxy on the inside of the rings and also the screw threads of my stock UltraDot rings and tighten them WELL. Never a problem.

Might be a problem when you want to remove them LOL

I'm not sure I'd call the UD split rings junk. As long as they are installed correctly they hold fine. If you want something that will maintain zero during removal and replacement get some Burris Zee rings or something similar.

UD rings are fine on a 22, if you want good 45 rings, go to walmart and get weaver quad lock, 10.00 bucks a set. part #49046

I agree with Dan, I wouldn't call them junk. They just don't do what I want, and that is to be able to remove and remount the scope when I clean the pistol thoroughly. And...so I can bring along a spare dot, already sighted in, to matches and be able to swap it out quickly.

I switched all mine over to weaver's years ago.

I have replaced all of my Ultra Dot rings with the Weaver "ZEE" rings. I have had no other problems with rings since I did this.

Switched to Warne steel 1" rings with my UD 1" on an S&W 41 with 5.5" barrel. The change helped balance the 5.5 barrel in my hand. YMMV.

Clark Custom Guns uses the standard Ultradot Matchdot rings with their frame mounts on 1911s, unless the owner requests, and pays for another type of ring.

I havent had any trouble with mine....I lined the inside of the rings with masking tape and tightened the bottom screws first then the top and of course blue loctite...

I'll do it...I'll call them junk! Yep, I consider the rings that come with the UD's junk. I've seen enough of them break, strip out, fall off guns and such to drive a sane man crazy. Can they work? Sure. Would you risk loosing Camp Perry on a chance that they would fail on you? I wouldn't and neither do my clients (joe fobes as the exception). Use Weaver Top Mount or Burris Signature or pretty much any quality ring...but take the UD rings and put them in a box to use as a rod holder, paper weight, finger widget or anything besides a scope ring on a rainy day!
